Chief Michael Maloney grew up in North Hampton, NH. After graduating from Winnacunnet High School, he joined the Army Reserve where he served as a drill instructor.
He started his 26-year career in law enforcement as a part-time officer in Rye and shortly after, he joined his hometown PD (North Hampton) as a full-time officer. After working his way up through the ranks, he was promoted to Chief of Police in 1997.
In 2000, Chief Maloney became the Chief of the Greenland Police Department, where he served until his death in 2012. Chief Maloney was a graduate of the 76th New Hampshire Police Academy and received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Hesser College.
On a more personal note, Mike was a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots and big Vince Wilfork. His drink of choice was vodka, specifically Grey Goose, which is why you’ll see many of our older t-shirts with a goose silhouette. Mike loved his family and friends, his incredibly fat cats and his recliner, but most importantly he loved his community. And our goal is to make sure that his legacy lends itself to being one of generosity and kindness. We’re well on our way.
He was eight days from retirement.
On April 12, 2012, Chief Michael Maloney was requested by members of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Drug Task Force to assist with the execution of a search warrant in Greenland, NH.
They were immediately met with gunfire and four sustained gunshot wounds. As the officers hastily retreated from the front porch, Chief Maloney entered the line of fire, pulling critically wounded officers to the safety of a patrol car, ordering them to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Chief Maloney returned to the immediate vicinity of the gun battle to defend other wounded officers.
It was at that time that he was fatally wounded.
Chief Maloney has been widely recognized for his brave actions on the night of April 12th.
